App Updates

Overview

The POS app gets new versions in two ways:

  • In-app updates — the app downloads these by itself in the background and tells you with a banner when one is ready. You restart the app to apply it, whenever it suits you.
  • Store updates — larger new versions published in the App Store or Google Play. These are installed from the store.

The app looks for in-app updates when it opens, then about every 15 minutes while it’s running, and downloads them without interrupting the till. Once an update has downloaded, a blue banner appears at the top of every screen: A new update is ready.

The update banner appears on every screen once an update is ready.

Requirements

  • An internet connection on the device

Steps

Read the update banner

When an update is ready, the banner shows A new update is ready with the message “Restart the app to apply the update. You can continue working and restart later.” and two buttons: Later and Restart now.

Restart now, or later

  • Tap Restart now to apply the update. The screen shows Restarting… for a few seconds, then the app opens again on the new version.
  • Tap Later to hide the banner and carry on taking orders. The banner won’t come back for this update; you can apply it any time from Settings → General (next step).

A good moment to restart is a quiet spell between customers.

Apply a postponed update from Settings

Open Settings → General. While an update is waiting, the In-app updates section reads A new update is ready and shows a Restart now button. Tap it to restart and apply the update.

A waiting update can be applied from Settings at any time.

Check for an update yourself

You don’t need to do this — the app checks on its own. To check right away, open Settings → General:

  • Under In-app updates, tap Check Now. The button shows Checking… while it looks for and downloads an update. You’ll either see “No new in-app updates are available.” or the A new update is ready banner.
  • Under Store updates, tap Check Now to see whether a newer version is in the App Store or Google Play. If it says “A new version is available in the store.”, update the app from the store.
Check for store and in-app updates from Settings → General.

Notes

Restart now waits for work in progress. While you’re on the payment screen, something is being saved, or a receipt or report is printing, the button is disabled and the banner reads “Finish payment, saving, or printing before restarting. If you are on the payment screen, leave it first.” It becomes available again as soon as that’s done.

Required store updates. When the app opens, it also checks the App Store or Google Play. If a newer version is there, a New Update message appears: “A new version of Eatabill is available. Please update to continue using it”. This message can’t be skipped — tap Update to open the store, install the new version, then open the app again. Make sure all orders are synced before you update — see Syncing.

The app never restarts by itself while running. If the app is fully closed and opened again, a downloaded in-app update is applied at that point. Saving a new language in Settings → General also restarts the app, which applies any downloaded update.

Troubleshooting

Restart now is greyed out? Finish the payment and leave the payment screen, or wait for saving or printing to finish, then tap it again.

“Could not check for or download the update. Please try again.” Check the device’s internet connection, then tap Check Now again.

“Could not check for store updates…” Check the internet connection. If it keeps appearing, contact support — the app may not be listed in your store region.

“Could not restart the app. Please try again.” Tap Restart now again. If it keeps failing, close the app completely and open it again — the update is applied when it reopens.

“In-app updates are available in installed release builds.” This copy of the app can’t receive in-app updates. Contact support to get the release version installed.
