App Updates
Overview
The KDS app keeps itself up to date. It looks for a new version when it opens, then about every 15 minutes while it’s running, and downloads it quietly in the background — the kitchen keeps working the whole time.
Once an update has downloaded, a blue banner appears at the top of every screen: A new update is ready. Nothing changes until you restart, so you choose the moment — for example, a quiet spell between rushes.
Requirements
- The KDS screen on Wi-Fi with internet access (updates download over the internet, even though orders always come through the POS)
Steps
Read the update banner
When an update is ready, the banner shows A new update is ready with the message “Restart the app to apply the update. You can continue working and restart later.” and two buttons: Later and Restart now.
Restart now, or later
- Tap Restart now to apply the update. The screen dims and shows Restarting… for a few seconds, then the app opens again on the new version — still paired and on the same station.
- Tap Later to hide the banner and keep working. The banner won’t come back for this update; you can apply it any time from Settings (next step).
Apply a postponed update from Settings
Open Settings and scroll down to the In-app updates card. While an update is waiting, the card reads A new update is ready and shows a Restart now button. Tap it to restart and apply the update.
Check for an update yourself
You don’t need to do this — the app checks on its own. To check right away, open Settings, scroll down to In-app updates, and tap Check now. The button shows Checking… while it looks for and downloads an update. Then either:
- “No new in-app updates are available.” appears under the card — you’re on the latest version, or
- the update downloads and the A new update is ready banner appears.
Notes
Restart now waits for work in progress. While the screen is bumping an order, marking items done, recalling, saving settings, or syncing with the POS, the button is disabled and the banner reads “Wait for order updates, saving, or POS synchronization to finish before restarting.” It becomes available again as soon as that work finishes — usually within a second or two.
What a restart keeps. Pairing, orders, and the selected station are all kept. The connection to the POS drops for a moment and reconnects on its own. The open-orders filters reset, and the sidebar Recall button is cleared — it can only bring back an order bumped since the last restart (you can still recall any order from Order History).
The app never restarts by itself while running. If the app is fully closed and opened again, a downloaded update is applied at that point.
Troubleshooting
Restart now is greyed out? The screen is finishing an order action, a save, or a sync with the POS. Wait a moment and tap it again.
“Could not check for or download the update. Please try again.” Check that the screen’s Wi-Fi has internet access, then tap Check now again.
“Could not restart the app. Please try again.” Tap Restart now again. If it keeps failing, close the app completely and open it again — the update is applied when it reopens.
“In-app updates are available in installed release builds.” This copy of the app can’t receive updates. Contact support to get the release version installed.
